Deep Ellum Blues

about

Deep Ellum Blues is a traditional song made somewhat famous by the Grateful Dead. It is a blues song with many variations with respect to the number of verses. I pretty much stuck to the Grateful Dead version but I totally re-arranged the song in a style which I call "bluesygrass". I've changed this to the key of G and tried to uphold a stronger 12 bar style. I added a piano track ... which I have not done in a long time and it shows. I don't get to use the keyboards when I play live nor do I get to do harp fills but the basic rhythm and singing was done in a single take and the harp was added on another track. BTW: I have a habit of playing cross harp, so in this case a C harp.

Deep Ellum is an actual district in Dallas, Texas and is home to a number of great blues musicians. Back in the day, it was more of an "electric avenue" which ran along Elm Street just off the downtown area. The locals called it "Ellum Street" and the name stuck.
